John Jay Papers

William Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 21 April 1817

William Jay to Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford 21 April 1817

Dear Peter

The last Mail brought me your letter of the 19th. Inst:1 I am glad you bought the family plate. Do you know anything about a likeness of Uncle F. I have been busy the last week in setting out young Locust Trees, & have planted about Seventeen hundred.

I enclose Notes of the Negociation In Spain. To condense the contents of a large Volume2 into the compass of 8 pages is I assure you no triffling labour; & it is often times perplexing to determine what is best to insert & what to reject. As you have read the letters yourself, you will see how much injustice these Notes do our dear Father; & yet it cannot be otherwise. Mr: Coleman3 ought to read the letters himself; & then instead of giving a summary of their contents give merely a character of the Negociation.

I will endeavour to send you by the next Mail. Notes of the remainder of the Correspondence. Nancy Maria & Augusta send their love to you Mary & Sally. Give mine also, & tell Sally that I have not forgotten that I owe her $5, & that I will pay her sometime in the course of the Summer shd: I happen to come to Town. The Season thus far very much resembles last Spring. We are suffering from cold & drought. Remember me to John & believe me, my dear Brother, Yours very sincerely,

William Jay
