Robert Hunter (1766–1827), innkeeper and public official, was born at his family’s home, Clover Green, in what is now Appomattox County. Between 1805 and 1823 TJ frequently patronized his ordinary near present-day Concord and Spout Spring as he traveled between Monticello and Poplar Forest. Hunter served as sheriff and justice of the peace for Campbell County. At the time of his death his personal estate was valued at $7,588.92 and included thirty slaves (Anna Maria Green Cook, History of Baldwin County, Georgia [1925], 357–8; Ruth H.
